Made in China and Owned By China

While it’s not news to most people that read the news, Chinese President Hu Jintao recently visited the United States to strengthen economic ties with the United States.  But I look at this trip more as an inspection by China’s leader to see how its largest debt consumer is doing.  Regardless, ahead of the trip the Chinese President announced $600 million in deals with American businesses.  This is standard procedure for China and is intended to smooth the rhetoric before arrival at most countries the President visits.

The trade deals announced ahead of this visit were very troubling.  General Electric, one of America’s largest multinational corporations known for innovation, had announced plans to build jet engines for the Chinese.  Many of us know about China’s horrible regards to intellectual property rights.  But even more troubling then this is that for GE to get the deal they essentially have to hand over the design plans for their engines.

It’s bad enough that China has taken many of our manufacturing jobs.  Now the Chinese are taking our blueprints to build jet engines.  This has military implications as well, since GE engines can be retrofitted for military aircraft.

On the subject of military aircraft, it was recently announced that China had developed a stealth jet fighter.  A lot of speculation surrounds this piece of equipment as it may actually contain restricted US technology.

As voters, we need to open our eyes to what is going on around us.  China is far from our friend.  They are using their economic might to wage an economic war with us.  Essentially, this communist nation has found a way to bring our democracy to its knees.  And guess what?  It’s working rather well for the Chinese.

While General Electric is portraying this new trade deal with China as an American job creation project, the truth has not been reported on properly by the media.  Just in the last six months, GE has closed plants in Virginia, Massachusetts and Ohio.  Does this sound like a job creation strategy to you?

Under the old marketing principals, consumers control two-thirds of the economy.  While this is no longer true, it is up to us to spend our money wisely.  A renewed effort by consumers, to purchase American made goods, is desperately needed.  Those that we have elected show no interest in adjusting the trade policies that allowed our wealth to transfer to countries like China and India.  First, millions of jobs were offshored.  Now technology is being freely handed over to the Chinese.  And it’s only a mater of time before corporate headquarters start moving out of the USA.

While President Obama will address the nation this Tuesday with his State of the Union speech, I hold no hope that he will address the many Americans that realize our economic recovery requires a major adjustment to the trade agreements we have with China.  If what we buy is made by China, and the debt we spend on these bailouts is funded by China, one could only assume it’s only a mater of time before we are totally owned by China.
